Canberra & Surrounds

Beyond the Pencil was presented at ResearchED Canberra on Saturday 29 August. Thank you to everyone who came along and for the generous questions. The slides and the session handout are below, and the three research briefs remain free and open access on this page.

The Evidence Behind the Groundwork Approach

Three open-access research briefs setting out what the handwriting research supports, where it runs thin, and the clinical reasoning the Groundwork Handwriting System uses in between. Free to download, no registration.

WHY RESEARCH MATTERS HERE

Research-informed means being honest about the evidence

There is a strong evidence base connecting handwriting instruction to literacy outcomes. There is also a significant body of practice-based literature that is frequently cited as if it were stronger than it is. The GHS takes both seriously, drawing on what the research clearly supports and being transparent where clinical reasoning must fill the gaps.

These three documents were written to share that reasoning openly. They are designed to be read by practitioners, not just researchers, and they are provided free of charge to all GHS Professional Learning participants and as a public resource on this page.

Accessible to practitioners

Written in plain language for teachers and OTs, not for academic journals. References are included for those who want to go deeper.

Honest about limitations

Where the evidence is thin (on line sizing, dosage, formation scripts, and font type), the documents make this clear rather than overstating what is known.

Open access

All three documents are freely available to download. No registration required. Share them with colleagues, schools, and teams.

GHS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SERIES

The three research briefs

Each document stands alone and can be read independently. Together they provide a complete picture of the evidence base underpinning the Groundwork Handwriting System.

DOCUMENT 1 OF 3

The Links Between Handwriting Instruction and Literacy

Summarises the evidence connecting handwriting instruction to reading, spelling, phonological awareness, and written expression, and explains why automaticity matters for classroom learning in the early years.

  • Handwriting and literacy

  • Automaticity

  • Cognitive load

  • Action-perception coupling

  • Phonological awareness

DOCUMENT 2 OF 3

Handwriting Research: Evidence-Based Handwriting Practices

Reviews the research on effective handwriting instruction, covering letter formation, explicit teaching, dosage, and lined paper, and identifies the practices with the strongest support.

  • Evidence-based practice

  • Letter formation

  • Explicit instruction

  • Dosage

  • Lined paper

DOCUMENT 3 OF 3

Where the Research is Limited: Gaps and Clinical Reasoning

Addresses the four areas where the handwriting research is thin: line sizing, dosage, formation scripts, and font type; sets out the transparent clinical reasoning the GHS uses where the evidence runs out.

  • Evidence gaps

  • Line sizing

  • Formation scripts

  • Font type

  • Clinical reasoning

About these documents

The GHS research briefs are written by James Lyra (OT) and present a practitioner synthesis of evidence available at the time. They are not a systematic review conducted to formal academic standards. References are drawn from open-access, peer-reviewed sources. These documents are intended to inform professional practice and are provided in good faith. They should be read alongside professional judgement and are not a substitute for formal clinical training.

The Integrated Hourglass: A Framework for Enabling School-Based Occupational Participation

The Integrated Hourglass is the clinical practice framework that organises assessment and intervention at FIRST Occupational Therapy and underpins the Groundwork Handwriting System. It describes a dual-stream approach in which top-down cognitive and literacy work and bottom-up sensory and regulatory work run alongside each other rather than in sequence, and it sets out the eight theoretical traditions the layers draw on, with the full reference list and the framework diagram.

The complete 35-page document, including the framework diagram, is available on request. It is not an open download because the framework is under review by academic colleagues and will continue to be revised. Asking for an email address is how we notify people who have an earlier version that it has changed. Your details are used for that and nothing else unless you ask.
